Mental Health, Personality Disorders, and the Effects of Being Left Untreated.
Introduction to Mental Health
Mental health is a crucial component of overall well-being, yet it remains widely misunderstood and stigmatized. It encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, influencing how individuals think, feel, and behave in daily life. Poor mental health can impact relationships, work performance, and the ability to handle stress effectively. Unfortunately, many people do not seek help due to misconceptions and societal stigma surrounding mental health conditions.
I
spent most of my life wondering why I struggled with things that seemed
easy, naturally occurring, for others. I was often called lazy,
forgetful, or irresponsible when, in reality, I was trying my best but
constantly falling short. My mind felt like a web of scattered thoughts,
each one tugging in a different direction, making it nearly impossible
to focus on what truly mattered. The frustration of knowing I had
potential but being unable to harness it and fully commit to anything was overwhelming. Only after
recognizing the signs of ADHD ,and actually paying attention to it, did things start to make sense. Understanding that my struggles weren’t due to a lack of
effort but rather a condition that needed proper management was the
first step toward taking control of my life. The next step was to actually seek proper help.
ADHD often comes with a disconnect between internal experiences and external perceptions. People might see someone with ADHD as:
-
Lazy, when in reality, they are overwhelmed by executive dysfunction.
-
Forgetful or careless, when they are battling a constant flood of thoughts.
-
Unmotivated, when they are trying their hardest but struggling with task initiation.
-
Restless or impulsive, when their mind is moving at lightning speed, making it hard to pause and process.
The struggle isn’t just with focus—it’s with emotions, relationships, and self-worth. On the inside, ADHD can feel like chaos, self-doubt, and exhaustion. But from the outside, it may seem like carelessness or a lack of effort. That disconnect can be incredibly frustrating and isolating.
Yet, despite this self-awareness, there are times when the weight of it all feels unbearable. The nights when my thoughts spiral out of control, when I feel like a failure, and when the darkness whispers that I am alone. It is in those moments that I turn to something that has, in many ways, kept me tethered to reality—a letter from my wife. A prayer she once wrote for me, long before we became strangers, remains my anchor. No matter how lost I feel, I return to her words, reminding myself that at least one person once saw something in me worth loving.
Dearest Lord,
I pray for my husband's mind, that You will keep it sharp and focused, that his thoughts will not conform to this world, but that they will be transformed and renewed by Your power.
I pray for his eyes, that You will protect them and keep them eagerly focused on Jesus.
I pray for his ears, that they will remain attuned to Your still and soft voice, and that he will stay attentive to the touch of Your Holy Spirit.
I pray for his mouth, that no destructive words will come from it, but that he will use his voice to build up those around him. I pray that he will always speak the truth in love.
I pray for his heart, that Christ will reign there, that only love for You will grow within it, and that he will be compassionate and loving like You. I pray that his heart will remain soft toward You and that his heart will be knit to the hearts of his children.
I pray for his arms, that You will make them strong and firm. I pray that he will find joy in his work and that You will bless the work of his hands.
I pray for his legs, that You will give him the strength to complete the journey set before him without growing weary or faint along the way.
I pray for his feet, that they will be quick to flee from temptation, turn away from evil, and be faithful in pursuing wisdom, righteousness, peace, love, and truth.
I pray that You will touch and heal him from the wounds of his past that he carries with him. Help him to be free from his fears and resistance and to surrender himself to Your gentle hands. Help him to open his heart to the love and power You offer him. Help him to trust in You.
In Your Great and Holy Name AMEN
Understanding Personality Disorders
Personality disorders are a category of mental health conditions characterized by enduring patterns of behavior, cognition, and inner experience that deviate significantly from cultural expectations. These patterns are pervasive, inflexible, and lead to distress or impairment. Personality disorders typically begin in adolescence or early adulthood and are classified into three clusters:
Cluster A (Odd or Eccentric Disorders)
Paranoid Personality Disorder: Distrust and suspicion of others.
Schizoid Personality Disorder: Emotional detachment and limited social engagement.
Schizotypal Personality Disorder: Social anxiety, eccentric behavior, and distorted thinking.
Cluster B (Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic Disorders)
Antisocial Personality Disorder: Disregard for social norms and the rights of others.
Borderline Personality Disorder: Intense mood swings, unstable relationships, and fear of abandonment.
Histrionic Personality Disorder: Excessive emotional expression and attention-seeking.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy.
Cluster C (Anxious or Fearful Disorders)
Avoidant Personality Disorder: Extreme sensitivity to rejection and social inhibition.
Dependent Personality Disorder: Excessive reliance on others for emotional and decision-making support.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: Preoccupation with order, control, and perfectionism.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity. While commonly diagnosed in children, ADHD often persists into adulthood. Many individuals, especially those undiagnosed, struggle with organization, time management, emotional regulation, and maintaining relationships.
The Effects of Untreated ADHD
Leaving ADHD untreated can have profound and lasting consequences on various aspects of life. The challenges associated with ADHD extend beyond inattention and hyperactivity, often affecting emotional regulation, relationships, career progression, and self-esteem.
Identifying Mental Health Struggles in Loved Ones
Recognizing mental health struggles in others can be difficult, but awareness is crucial in providing support. Loved ones can help by offering patience, open communication, and encouragement to seek professional guidance. Avoiding judgment and validating their experiences can make a significant difference in their willingness to seek help.
Risk of Maladaptive Coping Mechanisms
Increased likelihood of substance abuse as a form of self-medication for focus and emotional distress.
Engaging in impulsive or risky behaviors, including financial instability due to poor decision-making.
Chronic stress leading to burnout, physical health problems, and decreased overall well-being.
Understanding and addressing ADHD through self-awareness, professional support, and lifestyle adjustments can prevent these negative outcomes and improve overall quality of life. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but a vital step toward managing one's mental health effectively.
